MEDIA RELEASE - PUB SINGING IS COMING TO GAWLER!

From mid-November, Gawler locals and those from further afield will have the chance to be part of an exciting new pop community choir – Soul Song - with weekly rehearsals commencing at the Gawler Arms Hotel from Thursday 10 November.

Although the choir is new to town, Soul Song Choirs have been running pop community choirs for nearly 15 years in Queensland and online and currently have over 450 members. They are passionate about creating judgement-free, fun spaces where anyone can feel comfortable singing, regardless of experience or ability.

Soul Song Founder, Jacqueline Larsen said, “Singing is a totally unique activity in terms of the benefits it offers.  When you sing, you produce all the happy hormones that you might get when exercising, while also activating various pleasure centres in your brain and positively impacting your stress levels.”

“But even more than that, singing is proven to be an immediate and effective community builder.  When you sing together, you produce oxytocin which helps you bond quickly and deeply to those around you.”

And that’s what Soul Song specialises in – building thriving, passionate singing communities.  With carefully developed values and communication styles, Soul Song is known for putting the fun back into group singing.

Jacqueline continues: “We describe ourselves as ‘Choir, but not as you know it’.  We work hard on creating a good sound, but our emphasis is more on having a good time as we do it, rather than creating a perfect product.  So, we sing hard, but play harder!

“We sing a wide range of pop and soul repertoire that is easily accessible for everyone and teach predominantly by ear so that anyone can come along and get singing really quickly.  Our songs are chosen to be uplifting and energising for our singers and entertaining for our audiences in our role as story tellers.”

Jacqueline is travelling from Brisbane to Gawler to launch the choir with a one-off singing workshop on Sunday 10 November.  This is open to anyone over the age of 16 who wants to spend an afternoon singing some really fun pop repertoire in a relaxed setting.   You don’t have to plan on being part of the choir to attend

The songs will all be taken from our sell-out Bangers and Mash Ups show which debuted at Adelaide Fringe earlier this year in a combined production with Adelaide-based Vocalize.  They will be a selection of medleys and mashups of great pop ‘bangers’ that everyone knows and loves.  So even the most nervous of singers will be singing along with confidence before they even realise they are doing it!

Local musicians and experienced choir aficionados, Brianna Teehan and Cindy-Anne Macdonald, will be assisting in the workshop and will then be running the regular weekly rehearsals at the Gawler Arms, under the national banner of Soul Song Choirs.  Cindy-Anne will also be launching additional Soul Song Choirs in Adelaide in January.

Although Soul Song Gawler will initially just run for 5 Thursdays, from 14 November to 12 December, the plan is to then continue with a permanent choir from mid-January 2025.

Anyone looking to get involved in either the workshop and/or the regular rehearsals, can visit www.soulsongchoirs.com.au/gawler for more information.  The group size will be limited, so due to expected demand, Soul Song recommend people register to confirm their place at the workshop/first rehearsal.

Those who are curious but not ready to sing just yet, are invited to come and watch a free, informal performance and singalong at the end of the launch workshop.
